SMART Goals Versus SMARTER Goals

Let's look at the difference between SMART Goals and SMARTER Goals.

What is a SMART Goal?

The letters of the acronym S.M.A.R.T. are used to define the criteria that SMART Goals should meet: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

  • Specific: Be specific about what you are trying to achieve.
  • Measurable: Set measurable milestones to track your progress.
  • Achievable: Aim for a goal that is realistic and manageable.
  • Relevant: Ensure the goal is concerned with something meaningful to you and your life.
  • Timebound: Create a timeline for success and when each step should be completed.

What is a SMARTER Goal?

SMART(ER) goals are based on the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), but include two additional steps to increase the chances of you achieving your goal:

  • Evaluate: This provides a means of evaluating your progress while working on your goal, to determine whether you are on track.
  • Revise: this allows you to make adjustments to your action plan to get back on track if you come up against obstacles, or fall behind on progress.

How to Set SMARTER Goals

Follow each of the criteria defined below to craft actionable, measurable, and achievable goals in no time!

Setting Goals

Specific

Defining your goal objective is the first step in transforming your dreams into a plan. Start by asking yourself what it is that you are specifically looking to achieve, who will help you do it, and why it's important. Make sure your goal has clarity and focus so that you can immediately see the direction in which it will take you.

Measurable

After deciding which goal you want to achieve and why you'll need to decide how to measure your progress. To do this, define what a successful outcome looks like in terms of quantitative or qualitative metrics. This will also help you set interim targets along the way (i.e. milestones) that lead to the overall target.

Achievable

Once you've determined the purpose of your goal, it's important to think about how you are going to achieve it:

  • Determine the steps you'll need to take and the resources necessary to achieve your goal.
  • Identify potential challenges or obstacles that could arise as you strive to reach your goal. Determine how you can overcome them and stay on track.
  • Set trackable milestones to enable you to assess progress when completing your SMARTER goal.

When faced with a big goal, break it down into smaller and more achievable sub-goals and milestones. This will make it easier to stay on track as you work towards achieving your ultimate goal.

Set realistic deadlines for yourself for each step of the way, so you’ll always have something to aim for.

Set Achievable Goals

Relevant

Ask yourself why this goal matters to you and how it fits within your overall life plan. Knowing the answer to both questions will help ensure that the SMARTER goals you create are from objectives that are self-motivated and not just goals that have been set by someone else. Taking ownership of a goal is essential if you want to be successful in achieving it.

Evaluate how achieving your goal will affect your family, work, and social life. What sacrifices will you have to make? Are you prepared to bear the consequences of making those sacrifices?

Timebound

Once you've set milestones and identified the resources needed to reach your goal, it's time to create a timeline.

Map out each milestone and set a date for completion. This will provide clarity and ensure that you stay on track. Committing to specific dates can help you visualize success and give you an extra motivational boost when progress seems slow.

Evaluate

This step involves evaluating your progress on the goal just after the milestones you've set. Determine what's working, what's not working, and any problems being experienced.

Revise

After evaluating your progress, decide whether you need to make any adjustments to your goal plan to stay on track.

Reward yourself when you meet your deadlines and don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t. Reflect on what went wrong or why, then adjust your strategy accordingly to ensure success next time around!
